Preventive maintenance products and procedures: Most parts are cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild all-purpose cleanser TMC solvent cleans smudged keys on a keyboard Compressed air is ideal for removing dust (due to reduced ESD risk) Use non-abrasive cleanser on Mylar-protected LCD notebook screens If you clean a dot matrix printhead, use denatured alcohol, because it leaves no residue after evaporation. Never lubricate this print head. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) protects against power sags and loss by providing battery backup power. A surge suppressor protects against normal line spikes and surges, but not against high-voltage hazards such as lightning. Only disconnecting all external cables will protect against lightning. Components should be stored in anti-static bags when not in use, and kept away from temperature extremes and strong magnetic fields. A line analyzer can detect line surges, sags and spikes.
Identify the potential hazards and proper safety procedures relating to lasers and high-voltage equipment: Scanners, laser printers, and CD-ROM drives all use concentrated light which can harm the eyes if exposed excessively. The capacitor in a CRT tube (the display tube in the monitor) can hold a potentially lethal charge for extended periods. Never wear an anti-static wrist strap when servicing, disconnect the power, and wait at least 60 minutes after power-down before servicing. Always turn a PC off and disconnect all cables before servicing internally. Identify items that require special disposal procedures that comply with environmental guidelines. Batteries (such as UPS units and CMOS batteries) are harmful to the environment. Toner cartridges and ink cartridges can be refilled/reused. Chemical solvents should not be introduced to the regular water waste system. Identify ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) precautions and procedures, including the use of ESD protection devices. ESD occurs when two objects have dissimilar electric potentials, and will degrade an component's integrity. Even if not immediately seen, the effects could be apparent months later. Any amount of friction may cause enough static to risk ESD. To avoid ESD when handling parts, wear an anti-static wrist strap. An anti-static wrist strap is a rupper strap with a resistor, and a wire to connect to a grounded metal object. An AC outlet is the best ground for a conductive work bench. Store PC parts in ESD safe bags. Nylon, plastic, wood, and vinyl are not ESD safe materials. Low humidity increases the chances of Electrostatic Discharge.
Almost all computer equipment should be cleaned with only a soft, damp cloth with a mild detergent. ESD (Electro-Static Discharge) - Prevention of having electric currents damage system components. Compressed air it most effective for removing dust because of the pressure, directability, and less chance of ESD damage. Line analyzers are used for detecting line surges, sags, and spikes. Hard drives should be defragmented and backed up often. Hard drives should be protected from both magnetic fields and temperature extremes. Never lubricate the printhead pins of a dot matrix printer during preventative maintenence. Never wear a wrist strap while working on a monitor CRT because the stored voltage is capable of killing a person. ESD will degrade a compontents integrity. Although not immediately seen, the effects could show up months later. Any amount of friction is enough to cause enough static to cause ESD. To avoid ESD use a wrist strap, and always ship items in ESD safe bags. Nylon, plastic, wood, and vinyl are not ESD safe materials.
To discharge a CRT, with the power turned off, disconnect all the cables, move the cabinet cover, clip one end of an insulated jumper to chassis ground and the other end to a screw driver with a well insulated handle. While touching ONLY the insulated handle of the screw driver, slide its blade under the cup of the anode and touch its metal contact. Continue the contact for several seconds to insure that the voltage has been bled off. The best defense against a power surge is to unplug your equipment, unplug all power cords and external devices. In cleaning a card, turn off the system and remove the card. In cleaning a keyboard you should use a soft brush to remove dirt and dust particles, and vacuum the keyboard. To clean the laser printers rollers use denatured alcohol or a damp cloth. In choosing a surge suppressor check clamping speed and clamping voltage. Surge suppressors are good for cleaning fluctuating commercial power. Surge suppressors filter incoming power signals to smooth out variations. These unitd protect up to a significant point. |
