Building a better web site ...

Questy's, All about HTML What is HTML?

What is HTML?

HTML Stands for Hypertext Mark-Up Language. HTML is a simple, universal mark-up language that allows Web publishers to create complex pages of text and images that can be viewed by anyone else on the Web, regardless of what kind of computer or browser is being used. A mark-up language instructs computers how to format documents.

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) refers to the text files of code created in notepad. When an ASCII text file is created in notepad with HTML and saved as an HTML file, it becomes a web page. HTML files are used extensively because they are small files that exchange easily over any network, the Internet or an Intranet.

Part of HTML (and web page publishing) is formatting text, and adding pictures and graphics to a document much like traditional word processing or desk top publishing. The other part of HTML is the "magic" of the HYPERLINK. The HYPERLINK allows you to click on a link and go that designated URL (Uniform Resource Locator - the address of whatever you are looking for or linking to) with in your own site, or any site anywhere on the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is a vendor-neutral group of international members of Web and Internet developers setting standards for the Web including standards for HTML, which are called recommendations. These recommendations are the standards that Web designers should follow when creating Web documents. The WC3 creates recommendations for languages, such as HTML, and XML. For detailed information on the WC3 visit their Web site at: http://www.w3.org.

The different versions of HTML are discussed later in this course.

Lesson objective:

In our first session, my goal is simply to have you understand and produce a very basic HTML document. Understand, what is a tag, and how to use a simple text editor like notepad to edit and add tags. At the end of this lesson will be sample documents. Use these sample documents in a text editor, and add your own information to create templates for your own use. As your own web site grows you'll appreciate the need for templates.

You don't need any special software to create an HTML page; all you need is a text editor or word processor and a working knowledge of HTML. This class assumes you already know enough how to use Windows, a word processor or text editor, (in class we'll be using note pad), and a web browser, (in class we'll be using both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.)
