Questy's, What is a JPEG?

Green & Purple line, Questy's Colors!

Filename.JPG

The JPEG (named after the group that wrote the standard - Joint Photographic Experts Group) format was created so that true-color, 24-bit graphics could be contained in much smaller files. Compresses images smaller than GIF using a lossy compression technique for color images. The image creator can specify image quality in trade for file size. Some amount of data is lost, lossy compression technologies attempt to eliminate redundant or unnecessary information. The smaller the file size, the more picture information is lost, and the further the JPEG image will be from the original.

JPEG compresses graphics of photographic color depth better than competing file formats like GIF, and it retains a high degree of color fidelity GIF has lost ground to the JPEG format when it comes to photos. JPEG compression is most effective with full color photographs since it is capable of displaying 16.7 million colors. GIF images are limited to 256 colors, but JPEGs can contain up to 16 million colors--and they can look almost as good as a photograph.

Using JPEG’s

JPEG files cannot be transparent, so they will always appear rectangular on a Web page.
Unlike GIF, which has a single compression setting, JPEG has variable compression--you can set the files to have more compression but more lost data (meaning worse image quality) or less compression and better image quality.
